Workshops for Educators

Feel Confident to Provide Affirming Spaces where all Children Thrive

Teaching sexuality education and creating gender-affirming classrooms can feel intimidating with limited resources and support. Our goal is to empower educators with the confidence and tools to transform their inclusive ideas into action.

Gender Proficiency and Sexuality Education Workshops for Educators.

Designed to empower elementary educators, these workshops focus on creating classrooms that embrace and support the diverse identities and experiences of all students.

  • Acquire practical gender and sexuality-centred knowledge, skills and resources with our inclusion workshops for educators. This workshop will empower educators to feel confident navigating gender and sexuality topics in educational settings, enabling them to respond effectively to the diverse needs of their students

Educators will work through three key modules:

    1. Foundational Learning: Gender, Sexual Orientation, and the Gender Binary

    2. Critical Understandings: Gender Norms and Stereotypes at School

    3. Taking Action: Educators as Agents of Inclusion

  • This workshop is designed to equip elementary school educators with the essential tools, skills, and resources to deliver high-quality, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate sexuality education aligned with the Culture and Citizenship in Quebec (CCQ) program.

    Teachers will be able to:

    • Respond to CCQ Sexuality Education Leaning Outcomes: Learn how to design lesson plans that meet required sexuality education outcomes for elementary students.

    • Foster Curiosity and Respectful Dialogue: Support children’s natural curiosity about the world around them while encouraging open, respectful discussions on topics like bodies, babies, friendships, gender, and beyond in a respectful and age-appropriate way.

    • Implement Inclusive Language and Practices: Practice using inclusive language to foster an environment where every child feels respected and represented.

    • Utilize Practical Tools & Resources: Receive practical tools and resources that can be directly applied in the classroom.

    Pre-requisite:
To ensure educators have the foundational knowledge needed for this workshop, all participants must first attend the Gender and Sexuality Proficiency Workshop for Educators.

Egale 2021 National Climate Survey on Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia in Canadian Schools

“In total, over 4000 individuals in Grade 8 or higher across Canada participated in the survey. Approximately 39% of these students identified as 2SLGBTQ.” You can find the complete survey here.

“2SLGBTQ students need educators to explicitly and visibly support, respect, include, and validate them – all of which is exactly what every student in every school wants and is entitled to expect”

- Consensus of 2SLGBTQ Students in this Survey

Compared to 2SLGBTQIA+ students with no supportive school staff, students with many (11 or more) supportive staff at their school:

  • Were less likely to feel unsafe because of their sexual orientation

  • Less likely to feel unsafe because of their gender expression

  • Were less likely to miss school because they felt unsafe

  • Had higher GPAs

  • Were less likely to say they might not graduate high school and more likely to
    plan on pursuing post-secondary education

  • Felt greater belonging to their school community
